Earwax Microsuction FAQs

DIY methods, like using cotton swabs, can push wax deeper, causing injury or infections. These methods often provide only temporary relief and can lead to recurring issues. Always consult a specialist for safe and effective removal.

When performed by a trained specialist, microsuction is a safe and effective method to remove earwax. The process usually takes around 15-30 minutes and although it is usually painless, you may hear some noise or feel some minor discomfort, but this will typically go away in a few days.

Although the procedure is gentle, we advise you to use oilive oil spray (Earol or Almond Oil) to soften your wax 2-3 days prior to your appointment, as this will allow the procedure to be much easier and effective.

Microsuction is the most commonly recommended and safest method for earwax removal. This quick, simple procedure typically lasts 15-30 minutes and is highly effective at clearing the ear canal.

Why Choose Microsuction Over DIY Methods?

When dealing with earwax, the temptation to try home remedies or DIY tools is understandable. However, these methods often fall short—and can even make the problem worse. Here’s why professional Microsuction is a far superior choice:

Cotton buds may seem like a quick fix for earwax, but they often push the wax deeper into the ear canal, making blockages more difficult to treat. Using unregulated DIY tools like hairpins or ear-cleaning gadgets can also be harmful, as they can damage the sensitive ear canal or eardrum, potentially leading to painful infections or even hearing loss. Additionally, improper cleaning techniques can introduce bacteria into the ear, increasing the risk of infections that may require medical attention.

While ear drops can soften and loosen wax, they are not always effective at removing larger clumps or impacted wax, often leaving stubborn blockages behind and failing to provide the immediate relief that microsuction can offer.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

We start by performing an otoscopy to assess your ear and determine the most effective approach for wax removal. Using operating microscopes (loupes) for optimal precision, we gently insert a metal speculum and a slender nozzle into the ear. A miniature vacuum is then used to carefully suction out the excess wax.

After the wax removal, we conduct a post-otoscopy to ensure the ear is thoroughly cleaned. If any wax remains, we may use additional tools, such as forceps or the specialised Jobson Horne instrument, to complete the process.

You can trust that our expert approach will leave your ears fully cleared, ensuring you leave satisfied with the results.

How To Prepare For Your Appointment

To get the best results from your earwax removal appointment, we recommend applying a few drops of olive oil to each ear for three days before your visit. This softens the wax, making it easier to remove. If you’re short on time, we may still be able to proceed with a same-day appointment, even without prior softening.

While over-the-counter drops like Otex or Sodium Bicarbonate can help soften wax, we recommend olive oil as it’s gentler and universally effective, with fewer risks of irritation.

If the wax isn’t fully removed in one session, we offer a second appointment at no extra cost to ensure complete removal.
