Water Irrigation / Ear Syringing

Although funding for this service in GP surgeries is gradually being withheld, primary health care facilities are the ones that use water irrigation as a method of removing ear wax.

Water irrigation, which is based on conventional ear syringing, involves flushing wax, debris, or foreign objects out of the ear canal using a water jet. Any qualified healthcare or hearing care specialist can do it.

Although it uses a much more controlled approach, water irrigation seeks to achieve a similar result to water syringing.

How we do it

“Ear syringing” is another term used to describe the process of removing ear wax with water irrigation.

A specialised electrical device known as an “ear irrigator” is used in ear irrigation to precisely control and maintain the water’s temperature and flow.

In order to minimise contact with the eardrum, the device also targets the ear wall.

Our ear wax removal appointments take approximately 30 minutes or less, provided the wax has been well-oiled prior and not pushed in deeper by using cotton buds or other small implements.

How To Prepare For Your Appointment

To help soften the wax, we suggest applying drops of olive oil 3 days before your scheduled appointment for wax removal. However, oiling is not always required; if you’re in a rush and can get an appointment for the same day, we might be able to remove the wax anyhow. Although softening the wax does improve the chance of complete removal during the first appointment, a second appointment is scheduled at no additional cost if complete removal is not possible.

Although over-the-counter drops like Otex or Sodium Bicarbonate can provide some relief and soften the wax, individual differences in how each person’s skin reacts to these substances should be taken into consideration. Thus, we do not recommend using anything other than olive oil before Water Irrigation.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

Your appointment at EARLUXE will start with a review of your medical history, a consent form, and any prior earwax removal experiences. After that, an otoscope will be used to examine your ears, and if you would like to see inside, a video otoscope will be displayed on an iPad screen. However, some people would rather not see inside until after their ears have been cleared!

After we have given you an explanation of the process, you will be asked to hold a cup against your jaw beneath your ear to catch the water that is flushing out of the ear canal while a towel is placed over your shoulder to prevent you from getting wet. We will then use cotton wool to pat dry your ear after the canal has been cleared, and we will display your ear canal on the screen.

You will receive aftercare advice on how to maintain your ears following a water irrigation. Although the procedure has a 30-minute time limit, the amount of time needed to clear your ears will depend on how congested they are and how soft the debris or wax is. We will always make sure you are satisfied before your appointment is finished!
