Microsuction
Microsuction Technology
Ear wax removal via Microsuction is the most commonly used manual technique that your doctor is likely to recommend. Also known as ear vacuuming, Microsuction is one of the safest methods to clean the ear lasting between 15-30 minutes, and the process is very simple:
Firstly, we perform an otoscopy to ensure the safest method of ear wax removal. Next, using operating microscopes (also known as loupes), a metal ear speculum and a slender nozzle are inserted gently into the ear so that the excess wax can be siphoned out using a miniature vacuum. Afterwards, we conduct a post-otoscopy to ensure thorough cleaning.
If necessary, we will continue the process using the minature vacuum, or alternatively, using a small pair of forceps or a specialised tool known as the ‘Jobson Horne’. Either way, you can be confident we will be leaving satisfied with the results.

Is Microsuction Effective?
The short answer is yes, and there is supporting evidence to back this up.
In 2014, there was a study aimed to quantify patients’ perception, safety and efficacy of this procedure. Results indicated that the procedure was 91% effective amongst 159 participants at removing cerumen (wax) build-up. Continuing, Microsuction offers several benefits such as speed and precision, all whilst keeping your ear canals dry, meaning that microsuction can be performed on people with a history of ear surgery, infections to the outside ear or even a ruptured ear drum. This removal process is referred to be “dry” since no water is inserted into the ear, reducing the risk of infection or pushing the wax deeper into the ear canal.
Water Irrigation should not be used to remove wax if you have a cleft palate, a mastoid cavity, a perforated eardrum, or a grommet implant.

Safety and Side Effects
Whilst Microsuction is effective, it can still come with side effects but thankfully, these are mild and temporary:
- Minor level of Dizziness.
- Slight discomfort due to loudness during the procedure.
- Increased auditory stimuli sensitivity.
These side effects usually go away quickly. Our specialist takes every precaution to minimise risks and ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
